love, peace & happines,

FM Hi Low is movement music: danceable, driving, and conscious. Songs range from rootsy and acoustic to funky electric dance party's. Fraser MacDougall, lead vocalist and songwriter of Fm Hi Low has been traveling all over Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and The U.S.A, since the year 2000. Armed with an arsenal of guitars, effects, loops, beats, a dynamic singing voice and songs that soothe, groove and inspire. His blend of dub-folk'n' soul sounds and grass roots following have lead to performances in concert venues, cafes, and festivals, opening and sharing the stage with the likes of The Slip, Joel Plaskett, Craig Cardiff, and Matt Barber, etc. Not in music to be just an entertainer, Fraser's love for youth education, and passion for the environment has lead to performances and workshops at summer camps, elementary schools, market places, organic farms and backpacker hostels.
The FM Hi Low MixtapeFraser layed down his latest record The Fm Hi Low Mixtape in the spring of 2007. Tracked in Montreal and Toronto it holds within it a collection of songs written on a solo acoustic tour across Canada. Intended as a demo and partially funded by Factor (the Foundation to assist canadian talent on recordings) the Fm Hi Low Mixtape features three studio recorded original tunes, featuring special guest musicians. Combined with songs recorded in his montreal apartment studio and songs recorded with sound engineer/musician Jay Richards, up at the MacDougall family home In Mt-Tremblant, Quebec. For the record Fraser took on the role of singer/songwriter, co-producer, along with playing acoustic/ electric guitar, bass, drums, percussion, beatboxing, keyboards, synths, harmonica, piano, ukulele, and didge. The record has been streaming from www.myspace.com/frasermacdougall, with over 8,500 plays, and has sold 500 copies to date, available exclusivly at shows or at www.frasermacdougall.com.
Recently Fraser has been collaborating with some multi instrumental musicians including Mr.Stingray on Bass, keyboards, and vocals. Jay Richards on guitar, mandolin, and drums, and Steve Disher on drums and guitar. Together they are transforming the FM Hi Low mixtape and other new compositions from the studio sound to a full blown five piece band helping Fraser's live performances become more dynamic, danceable and community oriented experiences enjoyed by all ages. Located in Peterborough Ontario, the band is causing waves on the local scene and taking trips to play in Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, montreal and Quebec this winter.
With over an album worth of new material, FM Hi low is set to start recording this march with the expertise of juno award winning producer Pierre Marchand (Sarah McGlauchlin, Rufus Wainright, Ron Sexsmith, etc) in his Montreal studio. What will result from the sessions has fans excited, and the FM Hi Low ensemble making alliances across canada for a more extensive tour in the summer of 2008. or email movementmusic@frasermacdougall.com for booking by phone please contact : 705-772-0309 or email movementmusic@frasermacdougall.com
A multi instrumentalist, funktified, jazz schooled, folkie with a love for reggae, dub and electronic sound manipulation.People often forget that musicians write music as a form of expression. We forget that with every note or every lyric, people have something to say. Artists themselves often forget that music is a way of voicing one’s own opinions. Fraser MacDougall is that overarching reminder that a song is a conversation, a dialogue of values and perspective between the writer and the reader, the composer and audience. His music is heartfelt and historical in that it draws from both his external life experiences and his internal reflections. In the summer of 2005, he recorded What It Sounds Like with a friend, an 8-track D.A.T. recorder and one intention; to introduce the world to the mind of Fraser MacDougall, the album is what that sounds like.
He plays all of the instruments on the album but in a live setting, he settles into the acoustic and electric guitars and his soft-textured, yet powerful voice. Fraser is often joined on stage by a range of musicians, but continues to perform solo as well, and recently performed with a Montreal-based improv comedy troupe providing soundscapes for their show. It is this honest versatility that adds to his musical expression, and as he travels deeper within himself he also evolves with everything that comes his way. Fraser has sited musical influences from the worlds of jazz, folk, reggae/dub, hip-hop, rock, funk and electronic music, and is continually shaped by the artists he shares the stage with. Such artists include the Kalmunity collective, Throwback, Bullfrog, Joel Plaskett, Mathew Barber and In Us Aso, as well as an entire network of musicians in Australia and New Zealand.
Fraser uses his lyrics to tell the stories of his world travels, to express his politics and to communicate environmental awareness. Before leaving university Fraser founded, actualized, and performed in an annual eco-festival called Rock for the River. Many of his songs are self-reflexive about music itself, and the industry in which he often feels trapped. At the same time, Fraser is committed to using the positive medium of music to bring about changes in the world he lives in. His former band, The Stairway Movement, received a grant from the Quebec government that allowed them to musically educate kids in elementary school. .
The summer of 2005 provided Fraser with the opportunity to form, actualize and instruct a garage band camp for teens, within a sector of Montreal’s Camp Artemusik. The camp was the perfect outlet and summer job to live and play in the plateau region of Montreal, where he now resides.
His sound is somewhat hard to place as he draws from so many different wells of inspiration, but his sense of rhythm is perhaps the most powerful element to appear in his compositions. He no doubt, has an ear for groove and can turn the simplest progression or melody into the funkiest vamp. Fraser’s guitar work blends jazz and folk into a unique hybrid which audiences can comfortably dance to and genuinely marvel at. But like improvisation, Fraser’s art is full of surprises and rooted in exploration and evolution. Like Dylan, Fraser is a bard. Like Davis, he stretches himself in every possible direction. Like Difranco, his political views cannot be separated from the music that encases them. And just like everyone from whom Fraser has learned, he can teach and must be given attention. What It Sounds Like = In the first few days of June 2005 a solo album was recorded with aid from long time neighbor and sound engineer Drew Vergil, in the empty dining room of the recently sold MacDougall home. The material is a combination of new songs old original songs adapted to the recording process of a single musician layering: Vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, bass, piano, percussion, drum set, and harmonica. The result is an album titled “What it Sounds Like”, inspired by the organic process the neighbors developed in capturing the true sound of the instruments and vocals during live takes on a rented Tascam 8-track recorder. For which the lead guitar, drum, harmonica and backing vocal takes were improvised and all rhythm guitar and lead vocals takes were tracked from beginning to end. The album is an independant project that is assembled and distributed by Fraser at concerts and through this site. Live solo performances of the material will be largely guitar and vocal based, while working with live-loops,and multiple instruments. Since the albums release a group of all-star montreal based musicians collaborate with fraser to add there expertise, instrumentation and highten the over all live sound and performance expereince. Live shows are dynamic featuring different grooves, tempos and textures, live guitar and mouth percussion layering using looping devices, vocal harmonies, and multiple instruments: ac/elec guitars, upright and electric bass, Wurlitzer piano and korg keyboard effects, Accordian, glokenspeil, Cajoun, djembae, and banjo. Keep an eye out for upcoming shows.
